Social Mobilization for IDD Virtual Elimination

This paper was presented at the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Conference in Munich to ICCIDD, UNICEF and WHO. It explores the communication aspect of eliminating iodine deficiency disorders. It is based on a forthcoming book by Jack Ling entitled "Ending Iodine Deficiency Now and Forever".

"Rapid Urinary Iodide Test." Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Volume 83, Number 3 (1998): 1007-12.

Assessment of iodine deficiency and monitoring of iodine supplementation programs demand rapid, simple, and cost-effective methods for the determination of urinary iodide concentrations. The authors propose a semiquantitative rapid test, based on the iodide-catalyzed oxidation of 3.3', 5.5' -tetramethylbenzidine by peracetic acid/H202 , to yield colored products. This rapid test is suited to epidemiological surveys of iodine deficiency, especially in developing countries.

Small Salt Producers and Universal Salt Iodization: A Working Paper: This paper addresses iodization issues for small salt producers. Also discussed are trends in the structure of the salt industry, the possibility of economic policies and incentives, the role of marketing and communications, salt quality issues, examples of iodization as a low priority, and approaches and strategies to programming.

Iodine Deficiency Disorders in South-East Asia: This paper presents a detailed situation analysis of both the epidemiology and the control of IDD in eight affected countries in South-East Asia. It presents their area of need and elaborates a regional strategy to support them in their proposed activities for the control of IDD. The paper is divided into two parts:

1. Regional Overview
2. Country Situation Analysis.
