Infant Survival is Improved by Oral Iodine Supplementation.: Although this report suggest that infant mortality is increased during iodine deficiency, the effect of iodine supplementation on infant mortality is unknown. A double-maked, randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial of oral iodized oil was conducted in Subang, West Java, Indonesia to evaluate the effect of iodine supplementation on infant morality. Infants were allocated to receive placebo or oral iodized oil (100mg) at about 6 wk. of age and were followed to 6 mos. of age. Six hundred infants were enrolled in the study. Infant survival was apparently improved, as indicated by a 72% reduction in the risk of death during the first 2 mo. of follow-up (p<.05) a delay in the mean time to death among infants who died in the iodized iol group compared with infants who died in the placebo gourp (48 days vs. 17.5 d, p=.06). Other infant characteristics associated with recuded risk of death included weight-for-age at base line, consumption of solid foods, female gender and recent history of maternal iodine supplementaiotn. Oral iodized iod supplementation had a stronger effect on the mortalityof males compared with females. This study suggests that oral iodized oil supplementation of infants may reduce infant mortality in populations at risk for iodine deficiency.

Surveillance of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in Tasmania (1949-1984)
Until the late 1940's, Tasmania had high rates of thyroid enlargement in children and of nodular non-toxic goitre in adults. In 1950, a programme of deliberate supplementation was introduced to prevent goitre by the correction f of iodine deficiency. The first method used was the distribution of iodine tablets to school children. Later the method was changed to the iodination of bread. During the 1960's and 70's, unplanned increases in dietary iodine occurred, due mainly to the presence f iodine residues in mild. This report follows the effects of changes in iodine nutrition of the Tasmanian population during the 35 years following the first school survey in 1949.

Micronutrients: Increasing Survival, Learning, and Economic Productivity: This is a brief report about one USAID program with the power to improve the lives of millions of women and children. The things we take for granted - our vitamin pills, the iron in breakfast cereal, or fruits and vegetables available year round - are reasons that most families in the United States are as healthy as they are. The technologies that enable the United States to provide this kind of health protection to our citizens can be adapted and transferred to our developing country neighbors.
The benefits at the individual level are obvious. Millions of child lives are being saved and improved through programs that address micronutrient deficiencies. But there are benefits at the community, national, and global levels as well. Among the many interventions highlighted for IDD are: iodization of drinking water; iodized oil taken orally or through intramuscular injection; and salt iodization.
