The Uzbeki Senate approved a law on April 5 to require all salt to be iodized.

On May 7th, the Asian Development Bank forecast that enactment of the legislation would prevent thousands of stillbirths and save many newborns from brain damage.  "This new law will help reduce iodine deficiency that is the leading cause of preventable mental impairment, which significantly decreases mental capacity and labor potential of the workforce," said the bank's country director for Uzbekistan Hong Wei.
