With ICCIDD Gulf States coordinator Dr. Izzeldin Hussein in the chair as well as delivering a presentation on global progress towards universal salt iodization, scientists from America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia gathered in Oman March 8-10 for The International Conference on the Economic Importance of Sea Foods and their Impact on Public Health.  They met to discuss common challenges and to discuss aspects of global nutrition, with special reference on maternal nutrition and pregnancy outcome and the role of sea foods in human cognitive development.  The conclusions of the conference are enumerated in the “Muscat Declaration” and call for renewed and increased attention to support to elimination of preventable brain damage in children through USI.

In addition to the valued support of this group of scientific leaders in their home countries ICCIDD received requests to meet with authorities on special national actions as a follow up to the meeting and to earlier discussions with authorities from the UAE and from Kuwait.

The mission of ICIDD is to advocate priority commitment to iodine nutrition on the parts of a mix of groups and entities and to encourage a multidisciplinary approach to national programming. ICCIDD believes that national programmes must be fully supported by national resources to sustain success including a national coalition of scientific, cultural, civic, professional and public leaders. It is the combined, mutually supportive effort of all relevant partners that will achieve USI and reach sustainable levels of iodine nutrition.
