About one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage and new research suggests a third of them could be the result of an overactive immune system, Dr Siobhan Quenby of Liverpool University concludes, as reported in The National in the United Arab Emirates. Other major causes are age (women over 40 are much more likely to miscarry) and iodine deficiency. Of iodine, the paper reports:
"The element is essential for child growth. In July, the UAE Ministry of Health laid out goals to eradicate this deficiency in a joint project with the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders."
Quenby is testing a controversial remedy for the overactive immune system: treatment with steroids.
