India's small producers pitch in to combat IDD |

Collaborative efforts between local producers with small holdings, civil authority and groups, State Government and international agencies like MI, UNICEF, WFP and ICCIDD are aimed at increasing production of iodized salt by the small producers of Rajasthan, India, and results are beginning to show modest progress, reports One World South Asia.
The story reports progress in Rajasthan whose salt industry is one of the oldest in the country. Small salt producers in Rajasthan account for 10% of the entire production. In one area alone, Nawa, 953 salt units are in operation, producing around one million metric tons (MT) of salt – highest in Rajasthan. Quality continues to be a major concern.
WFP and MI, along with a grassroots organisation, the Centre for Community Economic Development Consultant Society, have identified and organised 15 Self Help Groups which include more than 160 small salt producers in the Nawa and Rajas areas. Each small producer was provided a salt crusher and a year's free supply to potassium iodate.
