Kraft Foods announced today a new food with human-safe pesticides intended to eliminate intestinal worms in tropical countries with inadequate sanitation. The New York Times story on the new food mentions how Kraft has also developed for sale in the Philippines iodine-fortified, Eden-brand cheese.  The article concludes:

"Iodine deficiency is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation, and it also leads to stunting and goiters."

"Mental retardation" is linked to the NYT backgrounder on mental retardation.
