Refusing to be distracted by chronic political discord and the threat of radical terrorists, Pakistan's embattled government is launching a two-pronged attack on IDD.  The intitiative follows discussions between the government and ICCIDD.  Specifically, the Health Ministry will request that the Education Ministry incorporate information on iodine deficiency, prevention and control into the primary school curriculum and, second, the Health Ministry is implementing a program in 65 target districts to educate salt processors and health managers to improve monitoring of the salt iodization process.  So far 1,200 teachers have been trained on educating students on the significance of iodine in their diet.

The Health Ministry will soon forward to Cabinet proposed national legislation  to promote the use of iodized salt.
