Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav, ICCIDD's Regional Coordinator for South Asia, with colleagues A. Somos-Krishnan, A. Chakrabarty and M.G. Karmarkar, are the authors of an editorial in the current (Jan-Mar 2008) edition of the Indian Journal of Public Health (password required) arguing for an effective national coalition to implement USI in India.
"(S)ustainable achievement (of USI) demands differ from those needed for elimination of the deficiency," they argue. "Instead of spending too many resources on the action plan, the focus should be on making the change permanent....We strongly suggest that the Government should call for a national advocacy event for meeting with the salt producers and to write to the Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajastahan for increased political commitment."
