Nicholas D. Kristof reviews the enormous paybacks of salt iodization in an op ed piece in today's New York Times, "Raising the World's I.Q." He advises President-elect Obama to invest in salt iodization and other micronutrient fortification.
Salt has a real downside, Kristof admits -- "it’s so numbingly boring, few people pay attention to it or invest in it. (Or dare write about it!)."
Kristof credits Canada for its international leadership though he doesn't specifically mention CIDA, the responsible agency.
Great article. Must read.
